A 25-year-old Gambian woman living in northern Italy was violently attacked by her husband on Saturday night, June 7, while eight weeks pregnant with their second child.
According to Italian authorities, the woman made a distress call around 10pm to emergency number 112, crying as she reported that her husband had beaten her inside their home in Castel d’Ario, a small town in the province of Mantua. She told police the violence started over a minor disagreement, but quickly escalated.
When officers from the Carabinieri of Roverbella arrived at the house—later joined by their counterparts from Castel d’Ario and San Giorgio Bigarello—they found the woman visibly bruised, with injuries to her face, arms and body. The beating reportedly happened in front of the couple’s four-year-old son.
She was rushed to the Civil Hospital of Mantua and admitted with a yellow triage code, indicating moderate injuries. Doctors confirmed she was eight weeks pregnant. Thankfully, the unborn child was not harmed. The woman was discharged with a prognosis of five days to recover.
The alleged attacker, a 34-year-old Gambian man, was arrested shortly after the incident. Italian police charged him with domestic abuse and personal injury. He is currently being held at the Mantua District Prison, awaiting further legal proceedings.
