An analyst on Gambian economic and political affairs Musa Basad Jawara is suspicious that under-hand tactics contributed to the degeneration of the situation that led to the dismissal of King FM’s Ebrima Jarra.
The sacking last week of the radio presenter of national appeal has caused both consternation and exasperation across the country. The daily dose of news that Mr. Jarra and his co-presenter Mr. Lamin Sanyang dished out to the Mandinka listeners across the land and beyond was a staple of a vast number of semi-literate and illiterate Gambians keen on getting enlightenment about the happenings in the country. The news materials, which were derived from local and online Gambian newspapers as well as King FM itself, became addictive for many as it was not difficult to see both old and young people glued to their transistors or mobile phones whenever the news hit the airwaves.
The sacking of Jarra, which was seen by many as disproportionate, has elicited speculations.
Credible sources informed JollofNews that an internal meeting between him, Lamin Sanyang and the CEO of King FM to discuss working conditions escalated into a dispute, resulting in the CEO’s decision to sack the popular news presenter, but analyst Musa Basad Jawara found this development “troubling and reflective of a broader issue within our country’s professional landscape”.
“It appears that unseen forces may have contributed to the situation’s deterioration,” Jawara, a former US State Department official, told JollofNews.
“Regardless of what happens next, I want to assure Jarra and Sanyang of my full support. I wish them success in their future endeavours and hope they find the justice they deserve,” he added.
