Karafa Sonko Says UDP Working Towards ‘Sanitising’ Voter Roll

The UDP’s chief propagandist Karafa Sonko has told JollofNews that the Gambia’s main opposition party is working towards ensuring that the voter register is sanitised ahead of the much-anticipated 2026 presidential election.

It could be recalled that when the United Democratic Party contested at the Supreme Court of The Gambia the outcome of the 2021 presidential election, it cited in its petition irregularities around the voter registration process. The Gambia’s biggest opposition party accused the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) of bloating the voter list with names of foreign nationals, who were ineligible to vote in the general election.

Political commentator Musa Basad Jawara reiterated last week that the opposition has a zero chance of winning the 2026 election if they remain fragmented and allow Gambians to return to the poll, using the 2021 voter roll.

But UDP’s campaign manager Karafa Sonko explained to this medium that the UDP is not oblivious of the issue. He said the party “is working” in tandem with the Inter-party Committee (IPC) to “sanitize” the voter register as the country gets ever closer to the general election.

“Some of these issues [voter roll] are being discussed at the Inter-Party Committee level and we hope the outcome of our discussions will be fruitful,” he stated in an interview with JollofNews on Monday.
