Residents of Dobong village in the West Coast Region have been increasing their alert levels over fear of cemeteries being used for voodoo practices.
The locals’ fears have been reinforced by the recent large-scale vulture deaths across one of the Gambia’s largest local government areas.
Dead vultures, with heads severed, have been discovered in the Western region settlements of Gunjur, Brufut, Bonto and Dobong.
The cold-blooded mass killings of vultures have given rise to speculations about the motive, with some people linking it to next year’s presidential election.
Some residents of Dobong village, the theatre of the latest vulture killings, have reportedly raised their alert levels when it comes to their graveyard and graveyard vandals, and have since encouraged others to do the same.
“We have alerted each other to be vigilant about our cemeteries because we heard that some people have been moving around, targeting cemeteries to bury jujus in graves underneath the heads of corpses. We have mobilised and we guard our cemetery at night from now on,” one local told JollofNews over the weekend.
