Prof. Herbert ‘Cautioned Against Prioritising’ Articles Of Ostentation Over Staff Welfare

The executive body of the lecturers’ union of the University of The Gambia (UTG) has reportedly cautioned the university’s vice chancellor Prof. Herbert Robinson against placing premium on articles of ostentation at a time when the country’s citadel of learning was dealing with contesting priorities such as staff salary.

JollofNews was informed that UTG was heavily reliant on bank overdrafts to pay salaries while the Vice Chancellor (VC) and management went taking bank loans for luxury items such as vehicles. The payment of lecturers’ salaries for November was delayed.

Prof. Robinson is alleged to have been draining the university’s little resources through overseas travels, which came at huge financial burden to the university. Efforts were made by JollofNews to reach Prof. Robinson.

The UTG, according to reports, was also grappling with simmering discontentment over administrative staff promotions, implementation of agreements reached during a three-week lecturers’ sit-down strike, UTG governance and salaries structure.

Meanwhile, the government is reportedly indebted to the UTG in millions of dalasi.
