Qatar Charity Launches $1.5 Million Development Project In The Gambia

Qatar Charity (QC) has officially launched the Empowerment and Economic Development Project to Support The Gambia 2025, a comprehensive year-long initiative valued at approximately USD 1.5 million. The project aims to uplift disaster-affected and vulnerable communities through improved access to essential services and sustainable job creation.

The launch ceremony, held in Banjul, was attended by key government officials and development partners.

Mohammed B.S Jallow, Vice President of the Gambia, praised Qatar Charity’s commitment to supporting national development efforts and acknowledged its strong partnership with the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), which operates under his office. He described the initiative as timely and transformative, aligning with national goals to build resilient communities and expand economic opportunities.

The project targets multiple sectors, including education, healthcare, food security, and economic empowerment. In its first phase, Qatar Charity is distributing essential items to improve daily living conditions in affected communities. These include 1,200 blood pressure monitors, 2,900 individual water purifiers, 300 family water purifiers, 1,000 school desks, 200 sewing machines, 900 solar-powered lamps, 900 kitchen utensil sets, 100 electronic wheelchairs, 600 manual wheelchairs, and 200 tents.

The second phase of the project, which is set to begin in June 2025, will focus on creating sustainable economic opportunities, especially for youth and women. It will involve the distribution of 130 tricycles for goods transport, 130 passenger tuk-tuks, and 100 grain mills to support small-scale businesses and cooperatives across the country.

Qatar Charity is implementing the initiative in close collaboration with civil society organizations and the NDMA. A cooperation agreement was signed during the launch, outlining the framework for effective coordination and sustainable delivery of services. Representatives of Qatar Charity reaffirmed their commitment to inclusive development, emphasising that the project is designed to empower communities with the tools they need to thrive.

The Empowerment and Economic Development Project is expected to benefit thousands of Gambians and contribute significantly to the country’s development objectives in 2025 and beyond.
