(JollofNews) – Four regional leaders are due to arrive in Banjul on Saturday in a bid to diffuse the crisis over President Jahya Jammeh’s refusal to accept the outcome of the December 1st election.
Tension is currently high in the small West African nation with a population of less than two million after Mr Jammeh annulled the results and filed a petition at the supreme court.
The results were called in favour of Adama Barrow and his opposition coalition.
Mr Jammeh had initially conceded defeat and praised the country’s electoral system as rigged proof. He changed his mind a week later citing huge and unacceptable mistakes by the electoral commission.
The opposition has described his actions as a violation of the constitution and have called on him to respect the will of the people.
And as the standoff continue, Liberian leader Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, Nigeria’s Muhammadu Buhari, Sierra Leone’s Ernest Bai Koroma and Ghana’s John Mahama will meet Mr Jammeh to convince him to hand over power to Mr Barrow.
They will also meet Mr Barrow who has said he is concerned about his safety and has called on the international community to put pressure on Mr Jammeh to step down immediately.
Mr Barrow is in favour of the mediation and has called for a smooth and peaceful transfer of power in the supreme interest of the Gambia.
In a media statement issued yesterday, Mr Barrow said he and Mr Jammeh are the children of the independence and it would be a honour to have a smooth transfer of executive power for the first time in the history done by two citizens who were born in the year th Gambia became independent.
He added: “I would want him to join me as president of the Second Republic along with ex-president Jawara of the First Republic in January to commemorate the birth of the third republic when I assumed office.
“Let him know that leaders come and go. Sooner of later, I must also go. This a fact that all of us act all times in the supreme interest of the Gambia.”
