Saho Criticises Government, Calls For Unity & Local Government Reform

Aspiring United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Hon. Sulayman Saho has launched a strong critique of the current government, describing it as unable to “serve the interest of the people.”

In a recent interview, he called for the formation of a “united force” to bring Gambians together, expressing confidence that his leadership could foster unity despite existing political and social divisions. “It is all here to enrich our democracy,” he said, highlighting the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping national policy.

A key focus of Saho’s proposed reforms is the overhaul of local government. He advocates for the “proper devolution of powers,” aiming to make local councils more independent and autonomous. At the same time, he stressed the need for strict measures to prevent corruption and mismanagement of public funds at the local level.

Saho also drew attention to the struggles of farmers, citing a groundnut grower from Foni who must travel to Brikama to sell produce, only to have buyers dictate prices. He pledged a new market policy that would empower farmers to set fair prices, ensuring they receive adequate compensation for their labor.

On the party’s ongoing vetting process, Saho expressed confidence and praised the other candidates, describing them as “high-caliber people.” He urged participants to “live up to expectations” while warning he would not support any outcome tainted by “foul play,” “abuse of trust,” or “use of money to sabotage the process.” He concluded by emphasizing that he sees no reason to mistrust the system and considers the variety of candidates a healthy sign of democracy. “At the end of the day, whoever is chosen, let’s support the person to salvage this country,” he said, reiterating his call for party unity after the selection process.

Saho, who served as UDP Youth President for two consecutive terms, has branded the party as a “party for the poor people,” committed to serving the nation and upholding the rule of law. He emphasized national unity, noting the shared identity of all Gambians, regardless of ethnicity Mandinka, Wollof, or Jola. “We are one people,” he said.

Economic revival, particularly in agriculture, forms a central part of Saho’s platform. He described the sector as “collapsing” and highlighted pressing issues such as “food insecurity” and a “collapsing economy.” He asserted that a UDP government, with robust public support, could drive meaningful change.

Saho also addressed the ongoing tragedy of young Gambians perishing at sea in search of better opportunities abroad, promising that his leadership could create local opportunities to reverse this trend. He pledged to empower youth and increase women’s involvement in decision-making, using his experience at Gambia College and as UDP Youth President to mobilize these groups for a common purpose.

Beyond domestic policy, Saho aims to promote Gambian culture and elevate the national flag on the global stage. He stressed the importance of building international relationships to transform The Gambia from a mere “recipient” of aid into a global producer.
