A deafening stabilizer explosion at the Banjul International Airport on Wednesday has caused widespread panic among airport staff and passengers.
According to an eyewitness account, the stabilizer explosion prompted rapid response from airport emergency services.
“The explosion sparked a blaze, which prompted passengers and staff to run helter-skelter for safety. Fire trucks quickly arrived at the scene to put out the fire,” said the eyewitness.
The cause of the explosion remains unknown.
No injuries have been reported so far.
The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority, which oversees operations at Banjul International Airport, has not released an official statement, regarding the incident. The airport’s emergency response procedures seemed to have been activated, with fire services dispatched to the scene.
In view of the airport’s strategic importance as the Gambia’s sole commercial airport, the incident may have implications for air travel in and out of the country.
