The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued a statement, distancing itself from a series of audio clips circulating on social media that contain disparaging remarks aimed at Hon. Mama Kandeh, leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC).
In the statement shared with the media, the UDP clarified that the views expressed in the recordings do not reflect the party’s official stance and condemned any efforts—by party affiliates or otherwise—to insult or undermine Hon. Kandeh.
“The UDP wishes to make it categorically clear that we strongly disassociate ourselves from any statements made by individuals, whether within or outside the party, that seek to insult, provoke, or undermine Hon. Mama Kandeh or his person,” the statement read.
The party went on to reaffirm its respect for Kandeh, highlighting a longstanding relationship between him and UDP leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
“Our party leader, Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, has consistently held Hon. Mama Kandeh in high regard, not only as a fellow political leader but also because of the historical ties and mutual respect between their respective families,” the statement continued.
The UDP also used the moment to remind supporters and the wider public of the importance of decency and national unity in political discourse. The party condemned what it described as “divisive rhetoric, tribal provocation, or personal attacks,” warning that such behavior only threatens the social fabric of the country.
“Tribalism and hate speech have no place in our political discourse, and we urge all citizens, especially our supporters, to remain vigilant and to reject any such narratives,” the UDP said.
The statement ended with a call for media houses and members of the public to treat individual attacks against political leaders as personal opinions, not representative of the UDP or its leadership.
“As we continue our journey to build a democratic, inclusive, and united Gambia, let us be reminded that respect for one another, even when we differ politically, is a cornerstone of the democracy we all aspire to strengthen.”
