Lamin Jobe, who has declared interest in becoming the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) flagbearer, has said his leadership ambition is centred on transparency, public consultation, and service to the people.
Jobe told reporters that his goal is to contribute to national development by focusing on those most in need. He said system change can only be achieved through openness and democracy.
“I have an ambition to work for my country, to help the people in dire need and to ensure The Gambia excels to higher heights. I believe in system change, transparency, and democracy,” he said.
He added that leaders must prioritise consultation with citizens in governance.
“As the government, whatever you do, you must consult your people. My leadership would concentrate more on consulting people before making any decision. This is the only government that should work,” Jobe said.
On the UDP flagbearer selection process, Jobe described it as a democratic exercise and not a source of division within the party. He urged party members to support the final choice of the selection committee.
“I am not seeing this as a division and I don’t see the flagbearer application issue as a race. It is just a democratic exercise within the party. We should rally behind the person selected by the committee. I believe in unity,” he said.
Jobe noted that refusing to support the chosen candidate would be selfish and counterproductive to party unity.
The UDP is in the process of selecting a flagbearer ahead of the country’s next presidential election.
