The United Democratic Party (UDP) has opened its flag bearer race for the 2026 presidential election, with eleven candidates putting their names forward including long-time party leader Ousainou Darboe, who is under growing pressure to hand over the leadership.
The announcement was made Wednesday at the party’s Manjai headquarters by UDP National President Aji Yamundow Jaye Yabo and Administrative Secretary Hon. Alagie S. Darboe. Officials said the process will be critical in deciding who leads the opposition against President Adama Barrow and his National People’s Party (NPP).
Darboe, 76, has led the UDP since its founding and contested four presidential elections in 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2021 all ending in defeat. His decision to seek the party ticket again has reignited debate within the UDP over whether a younger candidate would stand a better chance in 2026.
The list of aspirants includes:
- Ousainou Darboe
- Lamin Jawara
- Lamin M. Ceesay
- Borry S. Touray
- Talib Ahmed Bensouda
- Amadou Sanneh
- Karamo Fatty
- Sulayman Saho
- Dr. Lamin J. Darboe
- Lamin Jobe
- Dr. Ahmed Danjo
Interviews with the selection committee are scheduled for Thursday, September 5. According to Hon. Alagie S. Darboe, the review will focus on integrity, loyalty to the party, and leadership vision. Only three candidates will be shortlisted.
Following the interviews, the UDP will consult its members nationwide before attempting to agree on a single flag bearer. “If that fails, we will proceed with a voting process, and whoever secures the highest votes will be the flag bearer,” Darboe explained.
The outcome of the selection process will be closely watched, as the UDP faces the challenge of balancing loyalty to its founding leader with the push for generational change. With President Barrow seeking a third term, the choice of candidate could determine whether the UDP finally breaks through or continues its long wait for State House.
