In a strong show of support, Mariam B. Secka, Deputy Party Leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has endorsed the recent statement by Hon. Ousainou Darboe, calling for unity, discipline, and renewed commitment within the party.
Secka’s response, issued on 19 June, reflects a deep concern over recent tensions within the party and highlights the need to refocus on the core values that have defined the UDP over the past three decades.
“The recent misunderstandings and public disagreements, though regrettable, are not insurmountable,” she said. “Disagreement is a normal feature of any vibrant and democratic political party. But we must never allow differences of opinion or ambition to be manipulated into division.”
Her remarks come days after Hon. Darboe addressed party members and supporters, amid internal rifts that have sparked debate across political circles. Secka not only echoed his sentiments but stressed the importance of setting aside personal ambition in favour of party unity and purpose.
“The UDP is not a party of personalities,” she said. “It is a party of purpose, a purpose grounded in the hopes and struggles of everyday Gambians.”
Secka also praised Darboe for his handling of the upcoming presidential nomination process, commending his willingness to participate in the selection process for the 2026 presidential candidate, rather than assume the role unchallenged.
“His intention to submit himself to that process demonstrates the strength of our internal democracy and the confidence we all have in the structures and rules of the party,” she said. “No member is above these structures.”
With just over a year before the 2026 elections, the UDP leadership appears focused on consolidating its base and projecting stability. Secka’s message reinforces the idea that internal discipline and unity are essential if the party hopes to present a credible alternative to the current government.
“The coming months will define the future of The Gambia,” she noted. “The UDP must present a united front, not just to win elections, but to govern with purpose and integrity.”
Her closing remarks doubled down on a call for recommitment to the party’s principles and the national interest.
“Let us all… rise above personal interests, and return our full focus to the higher goal: the liberation and transformation of our country,” she said.
