(JollofNews) The Gambia government has today confirmed the execution of nine death row inmates by firing squad.

In a statement issued by Ousman Sonko, minister for the Interior, the government said all the executed prisoners, eight men and one woman, were sentenced to death by the Gambian courts of ‘competent jurisdiction’ and had exhausted all their appeals.

The execution of the prisoners came a few days after President Yahya Jammeh in a televised address to the nation threatened to execute all death row inmates by the end of next month to curb crime in the country.

Mr Jammeh said the executions are necessary to curb crimes and terrorism looming as a threat to the country’s stability.

“All punishment prescribed by the law will be maintained in the country to ensure that criminals get what they deserve, that is, those who killed are killed and those who deserve to be put away from the society are put away from the society in accordance with the law,” he said.

“There is no way that my government would allow 99 per cent of the population to be held to ransom by criminals.”
