(JollofNews) – An unspecified number of Gambian migrants deported from Libya last week have arrived in Banjul, APA can report Monday.
The migrants who were languishing in detention centres in Libya were returned through the Senegalese capital Dakar over the weekend.
There were also dozens of Senegalese nationals among the returnees from Libya where tens of thousands of black Africans still remain, desperate to cross the treacherous waters of the Mediterranean into Europe for economic opportunities.
Over 1, 500 black Africans mainly from The Gambia, Senegal, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria have died attempting the dangerous journey.
One of the deportees, Bubacarr Jallow a native of Kotu, a suburb of the Greater Banjul Area (GBA) claimed scores of migrants of different nationalities were deported through Dakar, after going through difficult times in the embattled North African nation, which is also beset by political turmoil.
”We did not know anything about Bubacarr for the past three months since his last call, but thank God that he is finally safely back”, his brother Momodou Jallow said.
The authorities in Banjul have not given the exact number of Gambians deported but expressed concern over the continuous deaths of migrants desperate to seek opportunities in Europe.
Recently President Yahya Jammeh called on the African Union to take swift action to address the phenomenon.
