(JollofNews) – A magistrates court in the Gambia Thursday granted bail to six women who were arrested for taking part in anti-government protest.
Isatou saidy, Lele Bojang, Sukai Dahaba, Kaddy Samateh, Fatoumatta Sarr and Amie Touray are charged with offences including rioting, unlawful assembly and inciting violence for demonstrating against the prosecution of dozens of opposition activists.
Police arrested the women on May 9 outside a courthouse in the capital Banjul where about 45 members of the main opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) were standing trial for staging protests against President Yahya Jammeh.
The women were granted bail in the sum of D20,000 each by Principal Magistrate Hilary Abeke of the Kanifing court, after a bail plea by a group of female lawyers representing them was not opposed by the state.
The women have all pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case continues.
