(JollofNews) – A supporter of President Yahya Jammeh’s ruling APRC party has been appointed managing director of the pro-government Daily Observer newspaper.
Ousman Rambo Jatta, Bakau constituency APRC mobiliser and former councillor who has no journalism training or experience will be responsible for the day-to-day business matters of the newspaper as well as its editorial content.
Mr Jatta replaces Momodou Sabally, who was simultaneously running the newspaper and the state-owned Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS).
The Gambia Daily Observer Newspaper Company Limited was the country’s first national newspaper. It was established in 1992 by Liberian journalist Kenneth Best, who was later deported from the country for his critical reporting of right abuses by the then military junta of Yahya Jammeh.
Some years later, the newspaper was later sold to Amadou Samba, a businessman and associate of President Yahya Jammeh who has since used it as a mouth-piece of the government.
