(JollofNews) – The United Nation’s Security Council Saturday strongly condemned Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh’s rejection of the official election results proclaimed by the country’s Independent Electoral Commission.
Tension is high in the Gambia and security officers are put on stand-by after Mr Jammeh on Friday told state television GRTS that he has rejected the totality of the December 1st election results and called for fresh elections.
He accused the electoral commission of committing serious errors which undermined the outcome of the final results.
But in a press statement issued on Saturday afternoon, the 15-member Council called on outgoing President Yahya Jammeh “to respect the choice of the sovereign people of Gambia, as he did on 2 December, and to transfer, without condition and undue delay, power to the President-elect, Mr Adama Barrow.”
The Council also urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from violence and remain calm, and requested that the security of President-elect Barrow and that of all Gambians be fully ensured.
Further in the statement, Security Council members also called on the support by the UN Office for West Africa (UNOWAS) and international partners, especially the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), to preserve stability in the west African country and work towards the installation of a democratically elected Government in the country.
The Council members also commended the Gambian people for the peaceful and transparent conduct of elections on 1 December and expressed their commitment to continue to closely follow the evolution of the situation in the country.
They further called on outgoing President Jammeh to respect the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, notably the rejection of unconstitutional changes of Government, and recalled the relevant provisions of Article 23 (4) of the African Union (AU) Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.
Jammeh should Gambia’s will,if he loves us
Yahya Jammeh does not love Gambians. He only loves himself and that is why Gambians should rise and force out this fool. Nobody should beg Jammeh because he would never listen until he destroys himself.
Mr Martin you are speaking for me
i still don’t see people talking about why he rejected the results…yu only talking without saying the reason behind it…jammeh has every reason to do so.
u rite zainab we should look at y before making any comment.
for a peaceful Gambia, after accepting the results he should take in good faith ask cheated to be out
Jameh having congratulated the president elect and also praising the electoral commission for a job well done should honorably leave office. It would be foolish of him to annul a free and fair election, except he prefers to be forced out by people’s revolution. Gambia is bigger than any foolish tyrant. A word is enough for the wise. Where are the likes of Gaddafi and Sadam Hussain.
Thats right Felix he will be the next one soon
