Opposition Leader Calls On Gambians To Pray For Peace

Mamma Kandeh, GDC leader

(JollofNews) – The leader of the opposition Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) has used his Christmas message to call on Gambians to pray for peace and stability in the small West African nation.

Mamma Kandeh said Christmas in the Gambia is a time that brings family and friends together and also enable people to appreciate the love in their lives that they often take for granted.

“Christmas is the season for peace, joy and fellowship with family and friends,” he said.

“As a country, regardless of our political uncertainty, we must continue to pray for peace and stability in our beloved country.

“Let us also stick together as one people to unite our country in this critical period. We need to be people who advocate for peace and unity in an effort to resolve the political uncertainty we find ourselves in.”

Mr Kandeh was one of the opposition candidates that contested against President Yahya Jammeh in the December 1st election, which was won by Adama Barrow of the opposition coalition.

Mr Jammeh initially accepted defeat in the 1 December poll, but later said it was flawed. Since then tension has highten in the country with soldiers deployed on the streets.

Neighbouring Senegal has put its troops on alert to intervene in the Gambia and ‘restore the people’s wishes’ if Mr Jammeh refuses to step down next month.

President Jammeh has already said he will not be intimidated, saying Senegal and other countries in the region had no authority to interfere in his country’s domestic affairs.
