Gov’t Secures Funding For Major Electricity Project In The Greater Banjul Area

(JollofNews) – Information Minister Demba Ali Jawo has announced that government has secured funding for a major electricity project in the Greater Banjul Area (GBA), which has the country’s highest population

density.
“NAWEC and the Ministry of Energy are still pursuing various initiatives to ensure that deadlines given to cabinet to resolve the
severe energy crisis in the Greater Banjul Area,” he told reporters Wednesday during a press conference held at GRTS building, located along MDI road in Kanifing.
Over these past decades, the tiny West African nation has been hit by recurrent power shortages that have left the manufacturing industry and other economic activities in total disarray. President Adama
Barrow has vowed to make the power crisis history for his countrymen accustomed to rive decade-long obscurity.
The government spokesperson said some of the initiatives speaheaded by NAWEC and the Mnistry of Energy include the US$22.5 million Indian line of credit electrification  project for the rehabilitation and expansion of the existing transmission and distribution network within the GBA.
The project , he went on, will also cover the extension of transmission lines from Kalagi to the Kiangs.
Meanwhile, Gambia and its development partners are speaheading big push to end the power crisis. World Bank, the African Development, the Islamic Development Bank (ADB) and the European Union have pledged
millions of dollars to help government solve the energy problem for good.
