Gambia’s Attorney General and minister for Justice has rubbished reports that he gave legal advice for the suspension of the country’s football association president and two senior executive members.
Gambia Football Association president Lamin Kabba Bajo, Ebou Faye the 2nd vice president of GFF and Bakary Jammeh ex-co-member were suspended this week by National Sports Council (NSC) over allegations of corruption.
Their suspension was made barely nine days before the country’s football fraternity elects a new president to run the affairs of Gambian football for the next four years.
The suspension was made on the recommendation of the National Assembly Select Committee on Youths and Sports following an investigation into alleged tax fraud involving the officials of the football federation and legal advice from Ministry of Justice, pursuant to Section 16 of the National Council Act 2000.
But Aboubacarr-Baa-Tambadou, Attorney General and Ministry of Justice has denied making such recommendation.
In a media statement, the minister said: “The Attorney General’s Chamber and Ministry of Justice notes with concern reports in the media that the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) President and two other officials of the body were suspended, supposedly on the recommendation made in a legal advice proffered by this office. This office wishes to make it clear that it made no such recommendation.
“The legal opinion issued by this Ministry neither made any finding of criminal culpability against the said three officials nor made any adverse recommendations against them. “
