A magistrates’ court in the Gambia Wednesday remanded the driver of a van involved in last week’s fatal collision in the West Coast Region of the country.
Musa Gibba, 26, of Bajagharr village, is accused of driving the vehicle in a rash or negligent manner and causing the deaths and injuries of his passengers.
At least six people- all natives of Foni travelling to Brikama, were killed early last Friday morning when the 26 seater Mercesdes Sprinter van driven by Gibba collided headed-on with a lorry travelling from the opposite direction, killing Ismaila Badjie and Anna Jarju of Bajagharr village, Fatou Njai of Somita village, Musa Jallow of Arangallen village and Hamadi Sabally of Bondali village.
Investigations by the Gambian police revealed that Gibba was driving above the speed limit and had attempted to overtake another vehicle on a sharp bend around Pirang along the Trans-Gambia Highway when he lost control of the steering and collided with the lorry driven by 27-year-old Babucarr Mbye of Old Yundum.
Gibba has rejected the allegations and was remanded at the Mile Two Central Prisons by Magistrate Omar Cham of the Brikama court.
The case continues.
