Gambia: Darboe Irked At Government’s Failure To Immortalise Slain Activists

Ousainou Darboe, leader of the UDP

An opposition leader in the Gambia has expressed his frustration at the failure of President Adama Barrow’s government to immortalise the memories of pro-democracy activists who made the ultimate sacrifice to free the country from the clutches of the tyrannical regime of Yahya Jammeh.

Lawyer Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP) said activists like Solo Sandeng, Femi Peters and others, gave their all to the country and it behoves the government to recognise their sacrifices and immortalised their memories.

Solo Sandeng, former organising secretary of the UDP, died on 15th April 2016 less than 24 hours after he was arrested with a dozen other activists for staging a brief but peaceful protest against the former regime of President Yahya Jammeh at Westfield junction, Serrekunda, some 12 kilometres away from the capital, Banjul.

Soon after his arrest, he was detained briefly at the Police Intervention Unit, Kanifing before being transferred to the feared National Intelligence Agency’s headquarters in Banjul were he was lynched by security officials and buried at a secret location in Tanji village, Kombo South.

Since taking over the reigns of power, the government of Adama Barrow has arrested and charged some former security officials with his murder. However, it is yet to acknowledged the sacrifices and contributions of Mr Sandeng and others.
Mr Darboe said he finds it hard to believe that  the contributions and sacrifices of Mr Sandeng and other activists, which had led to Mr Barrow’s election is not being recognised.
“Solo is the causes causer or the causer causes. He is the cause of the causes that led to this government being elected,” Mr Darboe said in an interview with Peter Gomez of West Coast Radio.
“If Solo was just tortured and didn’t die, in all probability we wouldn’t have gone out. But because he died, we felt that while the government has the authority to arrest and interrogate anybody, it did not have the authority to torture anybody to dead and we couldn’t care whether there was a public order in place or not. The government acted illegally and we had to go out and protest.”
Disappointment
Mr Darboe who  was arrested and jailed for protesting against Mr Sandeng’s murder, said Gambians owe their liberation to Mr Sandeng and should erect a statue at the location where he was arrested in his memory.
He expressed his disappointment at President Adama Barrow for failing to attend or send representation to the UDP initiated Solo Sandeng Memorial Lecture.
Mr Darboe added: “I was disappointed that on the day that we were holding the Solo Sandeng Memorial Lecture, President Adama Barrow [a former executive member of the UDP] who had worked closely with Solo Sandeng was also inaugurating his Fans’ Club Bureau.

“I would have hope that the president would have been advised otherwise or to send some representation to the Solo Sandeng Memorial Lecture and acknowledge the immense sacrifices that Solo had made for this country.  The president and Solo worked closely as junior [executive] officers of the UDP and I had expected him to grace the occasion as a friend of Solo Sandeng rather than opening the headquarters of a rival organisation to the UDP.

Solo Sandeng, Gambia oposition member died in detention for protesting against electoral reform.
Solo Sandeng leading the anti-regime protest before he was arrested and lynched by security officials.
“Solo was using the UDP platform to advocate for change and it was theUDP platform that impelled him to go out and demonstrate. So we owe our liberation to him. He was more than a Steve Biko to the Gambia.
“No one should wait for a UDP government to come into power before he is immortalised. The current government should do it because it owes its existence to Solo and should immortalise him by having his statue somewhere.”
Self-made man
Fighting back tears, the former Foreign minister and vice president described Mr Sandeng as an intelligent and self-made man.
“Solo never went to any formal school but he educated himself. He could play scrabble and was computer literate. He only went to local Quranic school (Daara) and he never abandoned what he learnt at Daara. He was always with the Quran when we go out on the campaign trail and will read some chapters of the Quran everyday before he did anything else.
Gallant Man
“When we were going out on 16th April 2016, I knew his health condition was not in great condition so asked him to go back home.  But Femi’s response to me was ‘Ousainou, I will die where you die.’
“These are people who really deserved to be remembered by the Gambia irrespective of your political affiliation.”

  1. It is a shame. Is it not.
We must do this, for Solo and others.
    God Bless The Gambia.

  2. 1. Solo Sandeng should be allowed to rest in peace. Continually using him as a political football is likely going to evoke responses which may not sit well with many people or even appear insensitive.
    2. I would suggest a National Memorial to commemorate ALL victims of the regime, rather than one that immortalises an individual. Criteria to qualify for immortalisation should require more than a single act of activism.
    3. We owe our freedom to our collective efforts under the guidance of an all party coalition project. Any other claims are a blatant refusal to accept and acknowledge this incontestable fact and Mr Darboe needs to show some humility and acknowledge the role of Coalition 2016 in effecting change.

  3. Ousainou will try to make political capital out of every given opportunity. I’ll bet he has not thought through the broader ramifications of erecting a statue dedicated to the memory of Solo Sandeng, may he continue to rest gently in paradise.
Best practice dictates that a committee of specialists is put together to investigate the desirability, the benefits from intrinsic to economic, the feasibility and eventually make a set of recommendations to the responsible line ministry or a department of antiquities and monuments.
Ousainou cannot claim not to know how such is done. Using that issue on his platform for cheap political gains is below standard. But what’s standard to the man himself and the UDP at large? The moment he accepted to become the Vice President, I knew we were heading for troubled waters.
Just look at the chair he sat on at the UDP political rally in Wellingara yesterday . Boy! Was he not a Mansa?! They are all turning our politics into personality cultism. I did not hear a single program or policy issue on any area that should be crucial to the nation and its citizens. That’s much more frightening than not having a monument erected.

    • Mwalimu, I often hear people claiming that Mr Ousainou Darboe (and some in the UDP) believe strongly that he is divinely destined to be President of our country, but I have never taken this seriously. However, I watched a 2hour clip of his recent interview with Haruna Drammeh (On YouTube) where he seemed to have alluded to a divine path to the presidency.
According to him, he was on his way to seek the consent of his elders and family, after he was approached to lead the UDP (and before he accepted), that a certain bearded youth with a motorbike, told him THREE TIMES, that he should not let the country down, with tears in his (youth’s) eyes.
This was supposed to be at a time when he (Darboe) has NOT YET supposedly spoken to anyone not close to him about the UDP offer; certainly not to any “outsiders”, yet this bearded young man, some how, knew Mr Darboe’s mission on that day.
And the fact that the appeal (“Don’t let the country down”/ “Kaana banko jangfaa”) was said THREE TIMES (not one, two or four) is significant because, for some reason, saying a thing three times carries a certain weight to it in our culture or maybe, even religion.
      What’s your take, Mwalimu?

      • Bax, I had to suppress a giggle because am sitting in a public place right now. Your last paragraph triggered the kind of laughter that comes from deep, deep down. If I would have been alone, am sure the out boast of laughter would have startled the birds around me.
Mystification of personalities (Dawda, Sheriff, Yaya, Adama etc, all did it), is a latent tool to gain and maintain power and privileges. Not only that, but also to abuse that power without consequences. That’s why they all never felt accountable to the electorate and the citizenry. The invocation of divine authority to rule over people is so unbelievably archaic and primitive that it’s now only fit for the animal world.
The most interesting key point to note here, is how there is a regular pattern in foretelling a future of “greatness”. There are always the following components:
        -numbers are nearly always involve.
-the prediction is done by a man.
        -it happens on the way.
-those predicted to be great are very often men.
-they have a close relation with their parents.
-the predictors have a certain spiritual character to them.
-Allah/God does not feature prominently on the prediction but at the end it predicates on his willingness.

Hence people have gotten accustomed to not to question deities and the chosen ones, they automatically gyrate towards them for a sense of belonging, submission and fear of the unknown. To cut a long story short, this is what gave rise to the power dynamics we currently have in The Gambia and by extension, Afrikka.
That’s why I always say the “educated” blakk man and woman have become miniaturized and weaponized against their own people. These are minions of white slave hustlers but even more potent because they (the coons) understand best how we think and behave. We are predictable to them. That’s my take Bax.

Yours in the service of The Gambia and Afrikka, I remain.

  4. I think we should take note of the opulence the UDP accords Ousainou Darboe and the ease and comfort with which he enjoys this king-like treatment. It’s happening quite regularly now and if a party seeking office can demonstrate such extragance in opposition, the chances of its continuation is more likely in government than not. We are being warned Gambia.

  5. We should take note but at the same time raise our voices against tendencies that are all too familiar in the public life. We should critique such behaviors and engage the top echelon of that party and any other political party in serious and intelligent debates to squash monarchical attitudes before they even think about it. But UDP et all is good at everything except explaining to the electorate their plans, policies and programs. They always find a way to dodge CLEARLY EXPLAINING their position on issues. I can’t remember how many times I’ve tried and failed.
The true danger lies in the miseducation of our people both in and out of the classroom. The “educated” permanently throwing sand into our eyes and into our already shackled minds.
Under such a political system, chronic poverty, disease, underdevelopment and other maladies fester and take root. From there it goes only downhill.

But the likes of Ousainou and his family remained cushioned because they either have send their kids and relatives to study in western universities or have positioned their minions in important government positions for the money to keep flowing in.

In the service of The Gambia and Afrikka, I remain.

  6. Mwalimu, I couldn’t agree more with you as stated below and will add a big HAHATAYE!!
“Mystification of personalities (Dawda, Sheriff, Yaya, Adama etc, all did it), is a latent tool to gain and maintain power and privileges. Not only that, but also to abuse that power without consequences. That’s why they all never felt accountable to the electorate and the citizenry. The most interesting key point to note here, is how there is a regular pattern in foretelling a future of “greatness”.
Indeed the pattern has become all too familiar.
From when Sir Dawda, ostensibly the KUNG FANUNTAY, escaped death at the ill fated helicopter crash but a hapless Alioune Badara Njai, that belongs to Wanainchi (ordinary citizenry in Kiswahili) sadly met his death was added to the mystical myth to as recent as 2014 when a rag tag team of empty barrel Gambian Islamic scholars and the SIC sought to create the “Nassirr Ud Deen” myth around the scoundrel Yaya Jammeh, these gimmicks will never stop as long as we keep being taken for granted.
Mwalimu, there are no secrets there but the endless game of fake scholars and pseudo pundits working to get into our heads. That can happen only if we let them Mwalimu!
Ousainou is no Manding “Prince” and there’s no TAMANSERO anywhere that’ll make me believe that he has a special right, calling or path to the presidency. The fact is that Ousainou has blown all the goodwill that he once commanded from Gambians that were once empathetic to his predicament under Yaya Jammeh. For starters, Ousainou let his rude TAALIBO up end the KARAMO that didn’t think to keep a trump card up his sleeves for a sauvetage (French).
So Bax, am I to believe that when, in the wee hours of the morning, when I saw a tall white bearded old man on a white horse that blew a white cloud towards me under the TALIBAA KOTO at the traditional pray grounds adjacent to Brikama Primary School (WCR) that I should one day come back to claim a special right to MANSA YAA in Kombo? Incidentally, the same white bearded old man and his horse all disappeared into the huge trunk of the TALIBAA tree in Brikama. The same TALO tree is still there.
Well, can’t I go on to peddle the story that I’ve come to see my inferences/interpretation of the encounter with the GINNA MORO come true?
A bearded young man, on a motorbike? Pleeaaase. Save us the heartache! Another Hahataye for Bax.

  7. MANSA Pjalo is therefore predestined to rule and his children and their children’s children will all be Mansa or mini Mansa. You killed me with that one Andy.
I would like to give you an example here. Look at Adama’s dress style before he became president. Take those photos, have them lined on a table beginning with the campaign period to inauguration. Go month by month and notice the metamorphosis from humble kaftans to skullcaps and the finger ring(s) that are said to contain jujus for protection and good charms. Analyse the body Language and the projection of an aura of entitlement, all contributing to create a mystical persona of a demigod. Just nauseating! I could just puke, I swear.
Add to that poisonous mix a Vice President telling the unsuspecting populace it’s God who has voted for Adama Barrow and his divinity should be accepted without question, for if you do, you will burn in hell fire. As if that’s not enough, a so called “supreme” islamic council visiting the executive to sing praises for their pockets to be filled when the cameras are turned off. These hypocrites constantly bombard the masses on the media to remain docile because one does not have to challenge a “chosen” leader no matter what your living conditions are. But they admonish the same people to pay taxes because that’s what will supposedly bring them development and prosperity. Imams like Abdoulie Fatty, Banding Drammeh, Ousman Jah, Chebu Cham and all those charlatans and womanizers pretending to be holier than thou. They contributed in creating a serial rapist with their benediction that he can do no wrong. Some of those ignorant dimwits compared the worst character Gambia has ever seen to a revered prophet. Am sure God will be very pleased to burn those mouths on judgement day if there will be one. Pathetic liars and philanderers!
Listen to the political discussions and hear them competing on Quran quotations. Lol. UDP will sweep the competition.
What we have is a perpetual combustible narrative of religion plus tradition and a dose of idolization that produce thieves and murderers. Allegedly sent by God. I said to a friend last week: God must have build a thorough hatred of us to curse us with such mis-breeds called leaders.
I hope the wind of change that started blowing in 1965, will finally sweep the land clear for the light of knowledge and wisdom to triumph over the darkness of ignorance and evil.

  8. NAMU MWALIMU! E NING CHE. NING MOKHO KE MIRI YORO LA Quois, E KA MANSAYAA BUNYAA. (Smile).
Mansa Pjalo it will be and as soon as the MANSA TOLO/Coronation is over with, yourself, Bax, Babu, the Darbo Kunda fellow, Sidi Bojang and other dissenters PALASI BAA KANTANGO and then we will go on to create the holy and Venerable Shrine of BOMBAADAA at the TALIBAA KOTO in Kombo Brikama, or Mbirikaama the Fulolu would say together with the most befitting ZIYAAREHS, HOMAGES and MAAGALS. All designed to distract folks from the pressing matters at hand. NO PROBLEM, INSAH ALLAH. ALLAH BETEYAA TA!! ALLU DUWAA KAFU DORONG/NANU YOKA NYAANN!! The game of SOSOLAA SO will be turned on its head!
From then on, we bring on the loudest and most obnoxious of Gambian sycophants and JALI KUNDA to sing our praises.
In addition, the TAALIBEH KUNDA, SHIRIFFU KUNDA, SONINKARA and a new breed of KOMBO KANG DAALU are brought into the new SIC mix to create the most fearsome and “venerable” CABAL in Kambi Bolongo.
Freeloaders and disciples of “ALLAH FUDI” they will all be inculcated to believe. The only requirement is that they engage in wholesale prayer for the perpetuation of Mansa Pjalo, the cabal and the MANSA KUNDA of “SUKURR KUNDA”.
Going further, Mwalimu, the myth of SASANDING BOLONG BAA, NIING MEH MAA, KANAG MAA will be promoted in earnest in Kiang and Jarra for indeed whoever runs afoul of the Sansanding, E KA TAKKI LEH leading to being LAKATI/cursed forever on account of the DANKARO that comes from the AL FAATIHA FINGOLU of Badibu Kunjuru and Kombo Kunjuru!
It’ll then be MANSA BENGO galore in the “Utopia” of Mansa Pjalo the king of LAAHH AK JINAY JOBE (a popular Faana Faana dish).
And then the drumbeat goes on Mwalimu showing that one doesn’t have to be a scientist or college professor to figure out the age old Gambian political gimmick.
One Halifa Sallah will then be nicknamed, SAMBA LACHIRI. Go figure.. (Smile Bax. Call to order accepted).

    • “Samba Lachiri!!!” Ehhh! HAKKUNDEH ALLAH, ONG MAHAMA KO MAODO HAMMAT BAH JEYYI. HALIFA KO ALFAJO/KELIFA DAARA INNI TEH ONG TUMA. (that title belongs to elder Hamat Bah. Halifa will be called respected elder of the daara).

  9. True Bax! That MAKHAMA (Samba Lachiri) truly belong to Hamat Bah. NI HAMAT TEPERREH E ALLA FUDI KADI!
KONI HAMAT BAH, MBADEHEN HAMAT SEDA E BUKARI SEDA. WAYE HAMAT TUNG?
(Watch out Hamat, it’s got to be some goodies for Hamat and some for Bukari. can’t be all for Hamat all the time).
That Samba Lachiri statement was meant to pull your leg Bax. I take that back. My bad.
    GONGA. HALIFA KO ALFAJO. Smile.
