The recent killing of Ahmaud Barry by two White criminals is not something new. These things are being highlighted now because of social media but they are nothing new and have been happening since Blacks were forcefully taken to America.
America’s statement that “all men are created equal” never applied to Blacks at any point in time.
The actions of the these men are rooted in what they have been taught through the years: Blacks are sub-human and so their lives or freedom is not equal to that of Whites.
Read about the Black Codes and Fugitive Slave Laws and you will see that the mentality of the killers is passed down from one generation to another. For the killers, Ahmaud was a fugitive simply by being in that neighborhood! And now we have another Black man killed in Minnesota.
If you’ve not heard about the story of a Black man who simply asked a White woman to obey the law before she called the police and claimed she was being threatened, please read that story. You’ll see the sense of entitlement of some Whites and naked racism Blacks suffer in the USA even when they obey the “law” (laws that are not applied equally)!
That is why I was sad when a Gambian living in the USA claimed that simply obeying the law in America keeps one safe. He then went on to blame African Americans for not voting and another criminalized them and blamed them for their criminal tendencies. When I asked one of these brothers to go and educate himself, he thought I meant going to university and getting degrees!!
Do not let your relative success in America lull you into thinking you are anyone special. Do not let your comfort lull you into thinking negative about African Americans.
The effects of Slavery, Jim Crow and other racist US Government policies are still being felt in America today. May Ahmaud and Floyd’s souls Rest In Peace.
