We all bore witness to that pregnant day of hope and promise
Our dreams of that day turning into the nightmares of today
The truth gave birth to lies
Bracing itself, as it delivered, on the mantle of betrayal
On the day before the truth lied, we celebrated vice and toasted to the blood of our unborn children as they cried
For halcyon days that they’ve been denied
In fairytale visions no one really ever saw
Our lips covered in the blood of the baby whose chance at life ended before it began
The darkened sun of the mother in labor set
Those trusted to deliver it never allowed it to rise
The day the truth lied
It was the day some swore the sky is red and that the moon could fit in their palms
They know because they are men of virtue
Men of God and men of high morals
Custodians of the heavens and hell
The day the truth lied, we remember our best friends: Hypocrisy and Greed
Hypocrisy gave birth and named the child virtue
Greed gave birth and named it smartness
We cheered because Greed is one of us
We cheered because Hypocrisy is one of us
The day the truth lied
Was the day promises meant nothing
Shamelessness turned itself into modesty
Country was replaced with self and kind
Those aspiring for power not seeing the similarities they share with those in power
What about the others, they too do it
Everyone does it
Winning is all that matters
Men of God prayed to the wealth of this world
The truth continues to lie
On the day the truth lied
We were all witnesses
But few claimed to see the truth
We were there
But few claimed to be present
We all heard it
But even men of virtue lost their ears
The truth lied
It was a day to behold
It was the day evil claimed to be doing God’s work
For the sake of nation and humanity
And we cheered and danced and celebrated
Knowing the truth was lying
But the truth never lies forever
There will be times of reckoning
The waters of the mighty Atlantic
Awash with the tears of the fallen
The blood of the unsung hero
Whose deeds have since been hijacked
By the mouths of the greedy and lethargic righteous
Who chose to hide behind time
Unaware
That time is man’s most implacable foe
We sang songs of mourning
Crying for the death of truth
While secretly celebrating the rise of lies
Unbeknown to us
That the truth is comatose
But it never dies
For it shall rise again
We await that day with baited breath
When lies tell the truth
But for that day, and for these days
The truth lied
