Senegal’s Macky Sall: G20 To Consider AU Membership In 2023

Senegal’s President Macky Sall

The African Union (AU) has been demanding for several decades a seat in this exclusive intergovernmental club of nations.

The age old grievance is on the verge of being resolved.

In Bali, Indonesia, members of the Group of Twenty (G20), an intergovernmental forum made up of the nineteen most developed economies and the European Union, supported the African Union’s proposed membership.

“I would like to thank the members of the G20 who supported the African Union’s (AU) application to join the Group at the Bali Summit in Indonesia. The AU’s membership will be considered at the 2023 G20 Summit in India,” Senegalese leader Macky Sall, who is also the AU’s current chair, announced on Twitter.

His South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, had already expressed in Bali his wish for the AU to become part of the G20.

This would, according to him, result in a more unified approach to solving the world’s current challenges.
