Niger: Bazzoum Escape Attempt Blocked

Niger Junta said it has twarted an attempt by ousted President Muhamed Bazoum to escape custody as he is being held since July 2023 by security forces.

In a news dispatch issued late Thursday evening and seen by JollofNews, the junta spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amadou Abdramane said everything started in the early Thursday morning when ex-President Bazoum was trying to move out of the Presidential Palace located inside a military Barracks.

The Junta spoke revealed that it was a three-step plan as Bazoum and his accomplices were trying to reach an unmarked vehicle parked not far from the Palace.

According to him, the second phase of the escape attempt consists of driving him up to a hideout located in Tchangarey district that lies at the Northern periphery of the capital city, Niamey.

Spelling the beans, Lieutenant Colonel Abdramane said the third and last step involve a foreign that was supposed to dispatch to helicopters to pick former President Muhamed Bazoum, his family and aides in order to exfiltrate them from Niger.

The news release said at the time of his arrest, Bazoum was accompanied by his family, two cooks and two security officers.

Meanwhile, reports reaching JollofNews editorial desk have it that a good number of people tied to the escape attempt have been rounded up and are helping Police investigators.
