NAWEC Managing Director, Nani Juwara, has clearly stated that the prepaid meter upgrade will not cause any fluctuation in power bills, adding that there is no need for concerns.
“There is no way for activity of this nature to create additional costs for customers,” he told reporters Tuesday during a press briefing held at NAWEC headquarter located around Westfield, Kanifing.
The Gambia’s utility is set for the TID (Token Identifier) rollover, targeting cash power meters that are in their system. The move taken by NAWEC comes at a time when there is an ongoing global software upgrade.
“The TID rollover will happen at no cost. Be rest assured that there is no other implications for customers,” Juwara reiterated in an attempt to shut down misinformation about the token – based prepaid meters being peddled on social media platforms by unscrupulous people.
Weighing in on the TID rollover, NAWEC Managing Director explained that current Standard Transfer Specification (STS) will expire in November 2024, adding that they are bound to complete the upgrade of the cash power meters before the indicated deadline.
He went further noted that when people buy purchase cash power three 20-digit token numbers will be generated and will appear on the slip.
According to him, when the customer insert the two tokens, his prepaid meter will switch to the new code while the third one will indicate the amount of power purchased by the customer.
