Guinea: Activist Calls For A Probe Into Prison Escape

In wake of the spectacular prison escape, Guinea’s renowned human rights defender Dr. Mamady Kaba is calling for a probe into how Captain Dadis Camara and three aides were able to be exfiltrated by a group of assailants.

“There must be an independent probe into the prison break in order to shed light on the issue and shutdown ongoing speculations,” Dr. Kaba told JollofNews in an exclusive interview.

The news of the prison escape broke out Friday evening after Guinea’s Army Chief, General Ibrahima Sory Bangoura, put out a statement, informing the general public that armed men have attacked Conackry Central Prison to free some prisoners. He assured his fellow citizens that no stone will be left unturned to bring normalcy back.

According to Dr. Mamady Kaba, only an independent inquiry will help to put a halt to tendentious informaions about what really happened.

When asked what would have been the impacts of the prison break on September 28 massacre, the human rights defender said that the ongoing trial could have been compromised. He then added: “Even the security of the State was about to be in peril.”

As three escapists out of four were rearrrested and sent back to prison, Dr. Kaba sidestepped a question about a possible amendment of the bill indictment.

“It is up to the Ministry of Justice to determine what would be the next step,” he said.

Meanwhile, in a statement issued on Saturday evening, Guinea’s Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Alphonse Charles Wright, made it clear that there will have an appropriate response to the prison escape.

He confirmed that the assault on Conackry Central Prison was spearheaded by a commando that succeeded in ensuring the exfiltration of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, Colonel Pivi, Colonel Thegboro Camara, and Blaise Gomou who are all linked with the September 28, 2009 massacre.

Minister Wright seized the opportunity to remind Guineans that the trial will continue and nothing will derail government from its objectives.
