In an ongoing hearing, Justice Ebrima Jaiteh has decided to go ahead with the AKI lawsuit filed by victims’ families against Maiden Pharmaceuticals and others.
When the case came up for hearing, Justice Jaiteh made it clear that there will be no delay after noting that the efforts by government to reach a settlement with victims are in limbo.
Thursday’s hearing has been punctuated by the defiant move of the first defendant Maiden Pharmaceuticals that continues to show disrespect to court proceedings.
The ministry of health also did not turn up despite the fact they were summoned to make an appearance in court.
Over 70 children have died in 2022 after drinking cough syrups manufactured in India. The move prompted World Health Organisation to issue an alert on the contaminated India-made syrups.
Victims’ families Chairperson, Ebrima Sagnia, told The Associated Press they are not surprised about the government delaying tactics.
“We are vindicated today. Those who were asking us to withdraw the case can now see for themselves that the authorities are trying to delay the trial,” he deplored.
The hearing was subsequently adjourned to May 6, 2024 to allow the second defendant Counsel to get acquainted with the case. Veteran lawyer Sheriff Tambedou will be advising Atlantic Pharmacy as to legal rights and obligations.
