The Ministry of Lands, Regional Government, and Religious Affairs issued a clarification to address public concerns regarding discussions about the Abuko Nature Reserve.
In a recent Cabinet meeting on September 19, 2024, a proposal was presented by the Minister, Hamat N.K Bah, which included the possibility of de-reserving part of the Abuko Nature Reserve to build a football field for local youth.
However, the Cabinet firmly rejected this idea, emphasizing that no portion of the reserve would be compromised.
Instead, the Cabinet approved a second proposal involving the allocation of land in Lamin, as well as a section from the National Agricultural Research Institute (NARI), to develop sports and recreational facilities.
These will include a National Football Stadium, benefiting the Gambian youth.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to youth development while ensuring environmental preservation, stressing that the integrity of the Abuko Nature Reserve remains a top priority.
