The Gambia Press Union (GPU) expresses concern over President Adama Barrow’s reported consideration of legal action against The Voice newspaper, following its story on 23rd September claiming that President Barrow has chosen a successor as part of an exit plan.
The story adhered to the principles of balanced and fair reporting, as outlined in the Cherno Jallow Charter of Ethics for Journalists. It provided a platform for two senior officials from the National People’s Party (NPP) to respond to the claims, thereby upholding journalistic integrity.
We view the President’s threat of legal action as unnecessary and a direct threat to press freedom.
We urge President Barrow to honor his commitments to protect press freedom and demonstrate tolerance towards critical media coverage.
We call on him to abandon any intentions of suing The Voice newspaper immediately.
A more detailed statement will be issued in due course.

Secretary General, GPU
