Detained Journalist Momodou Justice Darboe Charged

JollofNews has received reports that Momodou Justice Darboe, a journalist with The Voice newspaper, is currently detained at the police headquarters in Banjul.

His arrest is linked to an article suggesting that President Adama Barrow of the Gambia is contemplating businessman Muhammed Jah as a successor to lead the National People’s Party (NPP).

Darboe faces charges of false publication and broadcasting under Section 818 of the Gambian constitution.

Musa Sheriff, the owner of The Voice newspaper, has not yet been charged but has been summoned to the police station for questioning on Friday, at 9 a.m.

He has been asked to bring both his national and company identification documents.

During Darboe’s interrogation, authorities focused on the story’s origin and assessed whether those involved understood the potential security implications of the article.

Senior police officer Pa Alieu Jawara led the questioning and requested formal statements from those connected to the publication.

Earlier reports indicated that both Sheriff and Darboe were called in for police questioning regarding the matter.
