Journalist Momodou Justice Darboe has been released on bail after being detained for more than 40 hours.
His bail terms include providing a Gambian surety and posting a bail bond of D25,000. Additionally, Darboe is required to report to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Banjul on Monday, September 30, 2024.
Darboe, the Deputy Editor of The Voice Newspaper and Musa Sheriff Hydara, the paper’s Editor-In-Chief, were arrested on September 26, 2024. While Sheriff has since been released, Darboe still faces charges of false publication and broadcasting under Section 181A of The Gambia’s Criminal Code.
His arrest is linked to an article speculating that President Adama Barrow is considering businessman Muhammed Jah as a potential successor to lead the National People’s Party (NPP).
