The Local Government Commission Of Inquiry: A Gambian’s Perspective

As I recently published my memoir, “From Village Life in The Gambia to Global Views in Washington, D.C. and Beyond,” I’ve found myself with a bit more time to spare to write opinion pieces on issues that matter to me and my fellow Gambians.

One topic that’s been on my mind lately is the extension of the Local Government Commission of Inquiry’s mandate. The Commission’s role is to investigate alleged irregularities and improprieties in local government administrations, but its extension has raised more questions than answers.

Politics and Power Dynamics

The extension of the Commission’s mandate raises questions about the balance of power in our country. Is this a genuine attempt to promote accountability, or is it a means to exert control over local governments? The timing of the extension, amidst economic challenges and social unrest, only adds to the speculation.

Resource Allocation and Priorities

The Gambia faces numerous challenges, from poverty and infrastructure decay to economic hardship. The continued operation of the Commission will undoubtedly require significant resources. Are these resources being allocated effectively, or are they being diverted from more pressing needs?

As we struggle to keep up with basic services, the current state of our infrastructure is a stark reminder of our challenges. This rainy season has exposed the dilapidated roads, with pockets of water making off-roads inaccessible by vehicles. Healthcare and electricity supply are atrocious, leaving many to suffer in silence.

A Stark Contrast

Meanwhile, Southeast Asian countries like Singapore and Malaysia are advancing at an astronomical rate, investing in infrastructure, education, and innovation. As they leapfrog ahead, we seem to be retrogressing, mired in poverty, corruption, and inefficiency. The contrast is stark, and it’s hard not to wonder what could have been if we had prioritized development and good governance.

The Way Forward

As a Gambian, I believe it’s crucial to consider the broader implications of the Commission’s extension. While accountability and transparency are essential, they must be balanced with the need for stability, economic growth, and development. Only through nuanced discussion and careful consideration can we move forward as a nation.
