Where is the ‘Investigation’ report on the closure of Home Digital and King FM radio stations?
The assault on the media began on the very first day of this Government and it continues unabated! This is because both The Gambia Press Union and the rest of our citizens continue to accept violations always.
Three years today after UDP, NRP and GMC supporters assaulted journalist Kebba Jeffang at their press conference we see today how The Gambia Government went ahead to unilaterally and arbitrarily close down Home Digital and King FM radio stations and then subject their journalists to rude harassment!
The Government then waited until it was satisfied after one month to decide to unilaterally open these radio stations again! This is a clear demonstration of illegality, suppression of the media and sheer abuse of power!
The Gambia Government claimed it was running an investigation into those radio stations apparently for their reporting of the 3 Years Jotna protest. Since January 26 to today there has been no investigation report publicly announced! Why?
What was the Government investigating in the first place? Was there a need to investigate anything in fact? Was this not an attempt to just stifle the media hence threaten the sovereignty of citizens in expressing themselves freely and holding the Government accountable? Was this action therefore not an attempt to kill democracy and good governance in The Gambia? Indeed this was the very objective of this action!
Therefore let GPU go to court in The Gambia and at ECOWAS to demand justice and accountability ASAP. Let citizens speak out and protest at these acts of violence meted out to the media. These attacks are not just against the media rather these attacks are intended for you and me as citizens first and foremost!
The Gambia Government is attacking the media as a means to silence citizens. To instill fear and weaken citizens in holding the Government accountable! It is an attempt to cover up corruption, inefficiency and abuse of power so that no one will see or hear what is not right in this country. In that case the Government wants to be the only source of information to control the narrative forever. That is what is called Dictatorship!
