(JollofNews) – Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has won the support of the Gambia Football Association in his effort to win Friday’s FIFA presidential election, president Lamin Kaba Bajo said on Tuesday.
Five candidates will be standing on February 26 to replace outgoing president Sepp Blatter, banned for eight years amid a widening graft scandal that has shaken world soccer’s ruling body.
Bahrain’s Sheikh Salman who is the Asian Football Confederation president has recently won the backing the of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
“The position of CAF is that Sheikh Salman is our candidate after he presented his manifesto to its members because we believe that he can help in developing the game in Africa,” Mr Bajo said.
“As an executive member of West African Football Union (WAFU) we also agreed that we will vote for Sheikh Salman because he will pursue and continue Blatter’s legacy to develop football in Africa. So the Gambia will definitely vote for him.”
The other election candidates are UEFA’s general secretary, Gianni Infantino, ex-FIFA executive committee member Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, former FIFA deputy general secretary Jerome Champagne and South African Tokyo Sexwale, a former political prisoner who was jailed along with Nelson Mandela.
