President Adama Barrow of the Gambia has tested negative for coronavirus.
President Barrow took the test after his vice president, Dr Isatou Touray, tested positive for the disease last week.
Several ministers who had contact with the vice president have also tested positive.
A media statement from the President’s Office said “The president’s sample was taken on Thursday, 30th July 2020 and the results came out last night, Monday, 3rd August 2020. The Office of the President seizes this opportunity to wish all those infected speedy recovery and pray for the departed souls to rest in eternal peace. Stay Safe, join the fight to contain and stop the spread of Covid-19.”
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus is increasing in the Gambia at an alarming rate. On Monday, the country reported 173 new patients, taking the tally to 671.
According to the country’s Ministry of Health, the figures represents 43 cases of Covid-19 cases a day between last Friday and Monday.
An additional five people have die of the disease, taking the tally to 14.
