(JollofNews) – At least six people were killed in a fatal road collision involving a truck and a commercial vehicle along the Tanji-Serekunda highway, police have confirmed.
Several other passengers sustained serious injuries and have been taken to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in the country’s capital of Banjul.
Although investigations are still ongoing, police said the accident happened last Friday between 20 and 21 hours when a truck loaded with sand tried to overtake another vehicle.
“In the process of overtaking, the truck collided head-on with the van which was traveling from the opposite direction killing four males and two females on the spot,” a police spokesman said.
“Five other people including the van driver suffered serious injuries and were hospitalised at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital in Banjul.”
The truck driver was arrested at the scene and is currently helping the police with their investigations.
“The Gambia Police Force is once again sending a stern warning to drivers to desist from dangerous and reckless driving,” the police spokesman added.
“We urge drivers to strictly adhere to the speed limit and road signs at areas out of police sight. We wish to reassure the public that the full force of the law shall apply to violators of the traffic Act and regulations, and equally step up preventive measures to avert such situations in the future.”
