Gambia Immigration Department Needs HR Reforms

The Gambia Immigration Department plays a vital role in national security and border management. However, it is facing an escalating internal crisis that necessitates immediate reform, particularly in its Human Resource Management systems. There have been numerous instances of personnel absconding from work for extended periods, including years, without adhering to established protocols. Astonishingly, despite their absence, they continue to receive their salaries.

Moreover, there are no mechanisms in place to recover the monies paid to AWOL personnel for time not worked. Records have shown that over 40 personnel were unaccounted for at one point. Furthermore, some of these individuals have reportedly relocated abroad to countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Although efforts have been made at the administrative and operational levels to maintain order and discipline, the system appears to be breaking down further in its execution to deter such trends.

Cases have emerged where personnel files have mysteriously disappeared or been tampered with. This deliberate mishandling seems to be aimed at obstructing accountability and, in some cases, extorting or suppressing vital evidence. Such situations compromise the integrity of the institution and demoralize dedicated officers who continue to serve with commitment and professionalism.

To maintain public trust and enhance its credibility, the Gambia Immigration Department necessitates a comprehensive overhaul of its human resource processes. This reform is not only necessary but also urgent to ensure efficiency, productivity, and service delivery to its citizens.

The introduction of transparent policies, digital record-keeping, and accountability mechanisms is imperative to prevent individuals from exploiting the system unchecked. Only then can the department truly fulfill its mandate as a professional and trustworthy institution for Gambians to be proud of.
