The Gambian government says it has concluded investigations into alleged corruption involving the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Banjul City Council (BCC), and is now awaiting legal advice from the Attorney General’s Chambers.
Information Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay made the disclosure during an appearance on West Coast Radio’s Coffee Time programme on Wednesday, amid growing public concerns over the government’s follow-through on high-profile audit reports.
According to Dr. Ceesay, the probe into the IEC found that public funds were illegally deposited into personal accounts a serious breach of financial regulations. The BCC was also investigated, particularly over its controversial Ostend Project. Both case files, he said, are now with the Ministry of Justice.
“The government has completed its part, which is to investigate. The reports have been compiled and sent to the Ministry of Justice for legal advice,” said Dr. Ceesay. “It is now up to the Attorney General’s Chambers to determine the next course of action whether it is prosecution or another legal remedy.”
The Minister also gave updates on other internal probes across government institutions. He revealed that the Finance Director and Fund Manager at the Social Development Fund have been indicted and placed on administrative leave following internal investigations. Over at the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC), several employees have been dismissed after being implicated in misconduct.
Turning to the Gambia Public Printing Corporation, Dr. Ceesay said its Managing Director has been on administrative leave for several months as investigations into the institution’s affairs continue.
The Minister insisted the government is serious about fighting corruption, stressing that these moves reflect a commitment to transparency and accountability.
“We have done our part. We have investigated and taken administrative action where necessary,” Dr. Ceesay said. “Now the matter is in the hands of the courts, where the ultimate determination will be made.”
