Flooding In Fajikunda & Ebou Town Sparks Outcry Over Garbage-Clogged Drains

Heavy rains across the country on Monday left severe flooding in Fajikunda and Ebou Town, where residents blamed clogged drains and reckless garbage disposal for worsening the damage.

As the waters subsided, families were left cleaning waterlogged homes and clearing debris from blocked streets. Many accused neighbours of dumping trash into drains, a habit they said turned the downpour into a disaster.

“Why must they throw their trash into the drains? Don’t they know it’s causing more harm than good?” asked Fatou Bojang of Fajikunda, still mopping up after floodwaters invaded her home.

Community elders echoed the frustration. “We need to work together to prevent such disasters in the future,” Bakary Sanneh of Fajikunda Dumos told JollofNews.

The incident has reignited debate over poor waste management and limited environmental awareness. Residents say irregular garbage collection and inadequate disposal facilities have forced many to turn drains into dumping sites, despite repeated warnings.

By Monday evening, recovery efforts were underway as families tried to salvage belongings. Still, many worry the flooding will return with the next heavy rains unless both communities and authorities take action.
