(JollofNews) – The newly appointed Chinese ambassador to Banjul, Zhang Jiming, Thursday presented his letters of credence to the Gambian vice president and minister for Women’s Affairs, Dr Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy.
Speaking to local reports after the meeting at State House, Ambassador Jiming said the Chinese government attached great importance to its long running relationship with the Gambia.
He added: “Our bilateral relations are in a dynamic moment of development. Our mutual benefit is being deepened and cooperation in a broad range of areas has been launched and making progress.
“Our people to people exchanges are diverse, we have confidence in the potential and in the bright future of our bilateral relations and we are working for our relations to grow from strength to strength”
Ambassador Jiming expressed satisfaction at the progress made by Beijing and Banjul since resumption of diplomatic relations in March.
He said the Gambia and China stand to gain a lot from the new diplomatic relations which serves the fundamental and long-term interests of both countries.
The Gambia resumed diplomatic relations with China in March less than two years after it unceremoniously dumped Taiwan.
As part of the bilateral ties, the two countries agreed to exchange ambassadors and, in accordance with the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, provide necessary assistance for the establishment of embassies and the performance of their respective duties on a reciprocal basis
