Darboe Says Elections Are Not For Mocking & Taunting One Another

Long-standing opposition leader Lawyer Ousainou Darboe has stressed that local and national elections are not meant for mocking and taunting one another as they shape the country’s developmental trajectory either for good or bad.

“National and local elections are not child’s play. And it should not be like you are choosing at the ballot box just to mock someone. It should not be like that. It’s your future that lies in elections,” the UDP leader said in a recent interview conducted in Mandinka with JollofNews at his Pipeline office.

Darboe pointed out that there are consequences for wrong choices at the ballot box.

“If you don’t vote wisely today, you will weep tomorrow because what will happen wouldn’t please you,” he emphasised.

“But if you make the right choices, it’s like you have guaranteed your future and can pound your chest to say that I’m sure the person I voted for will serve the interests of the country, will not engage in activities that would harm the country and would be seized with national development,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hon. Darboe told JollofNews that the fast-approaching 2026 presidential election should not be taken lightly as it offers the electorate the opportunity to mortgage their country whether for good or bad.

When put to him that the sheer weight and significance of elections seem to have been lost on some voters, the UDP leader said: “I don’t think elections should be trivialised. Election day is very important because it’s that day that you’re going to mortgage the country. Whether you’ll do it the right way or not, that’s the day you’re going to do that. Election is not something to trifle with.”
