The urine stench that was oozing out of the Banjul police station’s cell last Monday was overpowering.
Despite the reported mobilisation of cleaners at the cell Monday morning, the urine stench was overwhelming.
“The urine stench can be inimical to the health of detainees. Detention cells should not be places of transmission of diseases. I believe the police high command will do something about this,” JollofNews editor Momodou Justice Darboe said shortly after his release from detention.
The senior police officer on duty Inspector Joof also found himself caught in the middle of the detainees’ craving for cigarettes and the enforcement of the smoking ban in the cell.
“I don’t think we should be deprived of cigarettes in the cell because smoking gives us that emotional and mental stability,” one detainee remarked after failing in several attempts to convince officer Joof to buy him cigarettes.

Though, this may come as a welcome development for the proponents of cigarette ban, former detainees sharply criticised it.
