Torchlight With Michael Scales: Thinking Out Loud

Michael Scales

(JollofNews) – It is a natural trait of some Gambians to launch into fantasia, thinking the British SAS will spectacularly creep into Mr Jammeh’s bed chamber at dead of the night to extract the incumbent by the ears, and whisk him away.

Honestly speaking, I think the SAS would be better employed doing Britain a favour and doing that to Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn. I would think it would be better if the British Isles would concede its national states to all become Scottish and move out this next 10 year political and economic famine.

The British have been remarkably quiet about Mr Jammeh’s defiance. Britain long ago conceded its global power to the United States and have recently rejected its European member status (a backlash from the poor against the rich in Brussels). We remain proud and democratic but internationally and financially broke. A classic combination that explains “Little England” and Winston Churchill must be spinning in his grave…lol. God bless him.

I was somewhat surprised to read that Adama Barrow has offered Mr Jammeh relief from prosecution and a free passage back to his home village, Kanilai. He made this promise whilst he is still not confirmed and sworn-in as president.

Some of his colleagues appear to be in total disagreement with this promise, not to mention the many Gambian citizens who would be due compensation, if there singular applications for death, torture and wrongful incarceration were to be finally considered through a reliable and independent court.

The African way is through truth and reconciliation, thus wiping the slate clean and moving to the next  democratic crisis.  How demeaning and humiliating for those Ecowas leaders who came to Banjul and left with nothing.

Ecowas leaders met Jammeh to persuade him to handover power

So what’s fresh?   I suppose Mr Barrow and his disenfranchised companions could take up permanent residence in a Senegalese hotel at the behest of the Senegalese tax payers. I would like to place a bet with Ladbrokes on Mr Jammeh winning the re-convened election. Who dares wins. My compliments to the Gambian Bar Association for pointing out how “normal “ law stands right now. But this is not a normal situation, and Mr Jammeh still rules by his rules and the devil can take the hindmost.

The US and UN condemnation is only echoes of a failed institution, governed by divisive national interest. It has lost all credibility as a humane and just organisation since the illegal invasion of Iraq and the wanton murder in Syria.

Mr Jammeh’s pet retort that the Gambia will not be colonised again will still negate the shame of past history from the West for the African. I have never underestimated Mr Jammeh’s intelligence and self-belief. Any sanctions will only hurt the poor and any attempt to arrest Mr Jammeh abroad will be worthless. He is not going anywhere.

Perhaps the British are “quiet” because they know the measure of Yahya Jammeh. Whilst he has the will and the support of the army he can deal with all comers. But we already knew this. Meanwhile the Gambian economy is dead and any new ideas are stagnant.

  1. Mr. Scales, you have painted a very gloomy picture for Gambia. You are essentially saying that Jammeh cannot be removed by the ballotbox, diplomacy or by military action. Do you have any suggestions for Gambians to get some relief?

  2. Yahya Jammeh is not going to remain president of Gambia. He will be sacked on or before Jan 18 2017. Mr. Scales do you know why? He just insulted a man that some of us know that is capable of and will send the message Yahya understand.
President Buhari said Yahya is out, he will be out. If Yahya refuse to walk out, he will be pulled out by his ears dead or alive. Scales is correct, US, UK and others will not intervene. They can’t intervene. PMB can and will.
I pray that Yahya is as intelligent as Scales suggested. If so, he needs to allow a peaceful transition, corporate with the coalition and respect the will of Gambians.
Yahya Jammeh is not going to extract any deals with Ecowas with Buhari as the chief negotiator. This ugly episode will end in one of two ways. Yahya will leave the state house with his thugs the GAF in toe dead or alive by the end of his “mandate”.

  3. Modou, Little has changed for Jammeh. He Knows whilst he controls the army, he can stay, and use his excuses for hanging on. Hence he moved quickly to promote loyalty within the ranks. Comparing Jammeh with Barrow. Jammeh believes he is The President ,,,Barrow does not. It is only those who hate Jammeh who are telling Barrow he is the new President. If Barrow can eventually Make it to The State House, which is uncertain, there are others within his ranks who will conspire against him for the Big Prize.
Right now Barrow is looking weak and not up to the job. It depends on who the army believes will be in The State House come February. Unless Barrow can force Jammeh out with a show of strength….Its over .Opinion

    • My Lady and Gentleman….look back to my opinion before the election…where I said “the guns must be lowered and the order to shoot must fall of deaf ears”. ,,and where are we today ? There is no effective legal process of law, in Gambia that can challenge the orders taken by the army.
I am aware of the close relationship between the Nigerian and Gambian governments. Also the dangers for Western intervention.I cannot find any recent history where any Ecowas force has intervened without former colonial leadership.{The French} Gambia is in a strange and unique position as being a former British colony, with no threat of invasion by any illegal force. I don’t believe The British or there big brother the United States..would intervene .If the Gambian army fires a shot, then this situation would change rapidly. Therefore its all in Jammeh’s hands. The longer this stalemate goes on the stronger Jammeh will become. The APRC are still a major force, and by no means totally routed. Jammeh is undermining the oppositions foundation. He knows Gambian’s very well .
I expect the opposition to fall apart. There is no “white horse” or indeed any” Trojen Horse” in the shape of a Nigerian democrat. With respects to Buhari. Opinion.

  4. Mr Scales, thanks for your response. I do believe that you are reading the situation wrong. Barrow is already showing strength by having all sectors of Gambian civil society speak up and demand Jammeh handover power. This includes but not limited to the Bar association, teachers’ unision, workers and trade unions, doctors and nurses associations, religious leaders (even the ones that Jammeh summoned a few days ago). The same thing applies to all regional, continental, and world bodies including ECOWAS, AU, EU, UN, etc. What other show of strength are you looking for? More importantly, I think both you and Jammeh are underestimating the Gambians’ resolve. Jammeh’s power is based on instilling fear in the people. People are less afraid now because they have nowhere else to go but fight back. Many never believed that Jammeh could lose the ballot. Now they know it is possible, so they understand their power. But to your point about external intervention, the UK, US, and others may not invade the Gambia to remove Jammeh, but what they could do is freeze Jammeh’s bank accounts and other assets all around the world. They could expell his family and deport them back to Gambia. They could do the same for all of Jammeh’s close associates. There are many options to take J?ammeh out.

  5. My friend…thank you for your opinion….I know Jollof News encourages all to speak there mind. I think, there are two questions, governing the potential outcome which are well stated in our exchange. The first is what is the right and the second is the reality. Predictions can only be based on assumption. We cannot change the outcome. Only assume to presume. I know how desparate the majority of Gambian’s are for real change. My opinion is based upon 16 years experience ,,,yours probably based upon much longer. The next few weeks will tell all. God Bless you for your belief and your expectation.Of which I share and support but with some reservations.

  6. Mr Scales, thanks for a healthy exchange. More importantly, thank you for caring about the Gambia enough to engage in the evolving debate and search for a peaceful resolution of the current impasse. See you in the New Gambia soon:-).

    • Your the reason I am still here…If wishes were horses, we will be in Gambia to see better days,,,,God willing,,,,,

  7. This gau makes me sick with his double standards. He is not worth listening to,will only confuse you with academic cabage….

  8. Ouch….!!! Which cabbage do you refer too dude ?

  9. Has no-one read the Gambia constitution? Barrow can be removed by a 2/3rd vote in the National Assembly at an y time and Jammeh’s party can manage this easily
