Gambia’s New Vice President Over Aged

Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang

(JollofNews) – The newly appointment of Fatoumata Jallow-Tambang is over age and in breach of the   1997 constitution of the Gambia.

Ms Tambajang, 67, who played an important role in the  formation of the opposition coalition that defeated former President Yahya Jammeh in last month’s election, was rewarded with the top job on Monday by  the country’s new president, Adama Barrow.

She will be the principal assistant of Mr Barrow in the discharge of his executive functions and  other functions assigned to her.

But her appointment is in breach of section 62 (b), which bars anyone older than 65 from becoming president or vice president of the Gambia.

According to the above provision, a person can contest for the presidency or appointed vice president if they are – (a) he or she is a citizen of the Gambia by birth or descent, (b) he or she attained the minimum age of thirty years  but not more than sixty-five years; (c) he or she has been ordinarily resident in the Gambia for the five years immediately preceding the election.

Meanwhile, a legal expert who preferred anonymity, has told JollofNews that Ms Tambajang’s appointment is lawful.

“As you are currently aware, the constitution is suspended at the moment and parliament is due to meet tomorrow to end the state of emergency and effect some amendments to the constitution to guarantee the rights and freedoms of Gambians,” he said.

  1. A job offer should be based solely on ability, experience and qualification. Age discrimination challenges the highest ambition to serve and contribute to nation building. With people living longer and healthier, The world needs to upgrade its thinking. Banish discrimination from the workplace.

  2. Hello Gambians

Speaking from my new home in Equatorial Guinea I would like to firstly say thank you to all fellow Gambians who contributed £11.4 million to my retirement fund. I will be spending your hard earned money most wisely.

    Yours sincerely

    Jahya

    • Bully is what yahya jammeh was capable and gross human rights abuses. He will face justice one day and goes around comes around. This world is guide by rule of law.

  3. P.S Jammey means lucky in English !

  4. Fellow Gambians

Speaking to you from my new palace in Equatorial Guinea, I urge you to ignore the comments made by someone pretending to be me…mainly Jahya Jammey. The rumour that I stole £11.4 million is completely false. It was only £9.8 million, and a fleet of luxury cars.

    Best wishes……..Jahya Jammeh

  5. @ peace= I think the constitution can be amended, but it might require the house to vote on it. However, i think the President can also issue executive orders on some of the laws he want to enact.

  6. hello to all,
I am biginning to smell a rat from this new government in the Gambia. This is not a good beginning. Mai Ahmad Fatty is just acting as someone doing eye service to President Adama Barrow. I am indeed not happy with the way he is uncontrollably pewing out unverified stories. Cant he leave everything with Halifa Sallah the Coalition Spokesman. Mai Fatty is acting so erratic and unprofessional speculating informations which are totally unfounded.

I dont trust him at all and not comfortable with him being a socalled adviser to President Adama Barrow because he has started misleading him with his unverified and unfounded stories he gathers from the comforts of his Dakar based hotels.

    H. E. Prrsident Adama Bartow be cautious in taking advice from any other person except the Coalition spokesman the most careful Halifa Sallah who goes by facts and facts only not speculations or rumours.

    concern citizen of the Gambia

  7. The rule you talk about was constructed by the same rubber stamp parliament that illegally extended Jammeh’s presidency.
Should that extension stand? Helllll no so conservative criticism only please people need to focus.
In fact the sooner the president comes home the better so we all can rejoice and people that want To and can help get access to the president

  8. Capability is what our nation needs right now
She is capable that’s what we need,
    Foreword ever backward never

  9. GAMBIA HAS DECIDED
May Allah continue blessing our mother land and may he protect HE MR ADAMA BARROW our president

  10. The new Gambia should be about protecting Fundamental Rights; Not promoting discrimination and discriminatory laws.

We all know that certain provisions of our constitution are themselves “unconstitutional”; either planted into the approved new constitution by the junta or deliberately ignored by the National Assembly to serve their party’s desire to rule for a billion years.

All this noise, about a most positive development that seems to contravene an unconstitutional and antidemocratic provision in our laws, is like raising a storm in a tea cup.

A constitution, in my non legal mind, after all, should reflect the voice of the people and whilst the age restriction has been totally rejected by many people in the country, the appointment of Madam Tambajang has been greatly welcome by many. So therein lies the constitutionality of her appointment.

God bless our nation. For ever; Backward never.
