(JollofNews) – Nko (I say) Yaya Jammeh wasn’t a benchmark. Whatever he did, through omission or commission, was neither a benchmark nor a standard to look up to.
There was nothing to emulate about him or his misdeeds. He was not a role model that any parent would have asked his or her child to look up to. He was the bogeyman or ogre. So we should stop making reference to his past as the benchmark we should measure our progress against.
A diversion from constitutional norm; Yaya did worse with impunity and no one ever questioned it. A questioning of whatever is happening now; you were completely silent for 22 years. These comparisons and others make me sick.
Our past under Yaya was nothing to be proud or to write home about. It wasn’t the hallmark of our history; it was our age of brutality and darkness…. The Coalition came on a high note, not only to do things differently but to also do different things; to put the nation on a higher pedestal; to restore and strengthen our democratic values, the rule of law, human rights; to give us back our pride and dignity lost in the woods of kanilia….. They set for themselves higher values and ideals; they raised the bar higher.
Since the Coalition sets for itself a higher bar and nobler standards, it is against these that we measure their actions, not by those prescribed by Yaya. So when people question the acts or actions of the new Government in the market place they shouldn’t be shouted down and reminded that “Yaya did worst” or “Yaya never respected the Constitution”. Comparisons aren’t only odious but they also provide a justification for underperformance or bad action, or tend to reduce or minimalise a bad effect…

Sidi,“Nteri Kaffo” was born out of frustration about the dominance of all sectors of government by “Banjulians” (Indigenes of Banjul). It was more of a provincial boys club than a Mandinka boys club. It may be true that the membership was mainly Mandinka but that is because Mandinkas are a majority in the country. It was common knowledge at that time that if a provincial boy went up against a “Banjulian” for a job it was pretty much concluded that he will not get the job due to lack of “right connections” within government circles. This has been happening consistently for years, even if the provincial boy is better qualify for the job he usually looses out to the “Banjulian”. It was the same issue trying to get a government scholarship to further your education abroad. Even with “Nteri Kaffo” in place, provincial boys tend to only get scholarships to African countries. Before “Nteri Kaffo” over 90% of all Permanent Sectaries, Directors of government departments, DG of parastatals, Sectary General, Establishment Sectary head of PMO, Accountant General, Auditor General and Heads of the security services the list goes on, were all “Banjulians” the few provincial boys at the top were almost all married to daughters of Banjul. “Nteri Kaffo” was formed to balance this equilibrium. It was true that there were Mandinka ministers but the teams that surround them were almost entirely “Banjulians” these ministers and other politicians have been inundated with complaints from their constituents about lack of opportunities for them. Their constituents could not understand how their representatives who were ministers could not help them. It was out of this sense of powerlessness that certain politicians decided to form “Nteri Kaffo” because they realised that their strength lies in their unity of purpose and that is the only way they can challenge the powerful Banjul lobby and survive it. Their agenda was for positive discrimination in favour of the provincial boy. The ethics of that is up for debate. This was the reason why “Nteri Kaffo” was formed, to fight for the rights of the provincial boys to get their share of the national cake not to promote a Mandinka hegemony as you would like people to believe. I will not deny the possibility that it’s dominant players were Mandinkas. However a lot of provincial boys benefited from it including former president Jammeh because it was “Nteri Kaffo” that fought for provincial boys in the security services to get promotions. Jammeh, like many other provincial boys in the army were passed promotions many times in favour of their colleagues who had the “right connections”, it was the direct and indirect pressure from “Nteri Kaffo” that most of them eventually got the promotion they deserved. So Sidi it’s high time you come up with another conspiracy theory because your current one does not hold water.

Gambians Paying Millions For New President’s Hotel Bills

Gambia’s new president Adam Barrow
(JollofNews)– Despite crying out to donors that he has inherited an economy that is virtually bankrupt and in need of immediate restoration due to mismanagement of the country’s finances, Gambia’s new president Adama Barrow is spending millions of Dalasis in hotel bills.
Mr Barrow who succeed long-term ruler Yahya Jammeh last month, is currently using the luxurious five-star Kairaba Hotel as his main office building pending the completion of work at the State House.
But despite appealing for emergency budget support to rescue the country’s ailing economy, millions of tax payers money is being spent on hotel bills for the president, according to an invoice published in the Freedom Newspaper.
According to the invoice covering between 30th January and 3rd February, the cost of running the Gambia’s new presidency at the Kairaba Hotel has cost the tax payers D563,750.00.
Between the above period, records shows that D15,000 was spent on mineral water and D125,000 on breakfast including coffee, tea, juice, hot snacks and sandwiches.

D148,750 was also spent to feed the president and 34 other people. D850 was paid for each individual for for every lunch which included a selection of hot food including fish, meat or chicken courses, pasta station, assorted vegetables, rice, potatoes and fruits.
The Office of the President also paid D175,000 to use the hotel’s main conference room, Jaama Hall, while D100,000 was paid for using communication rooms 2, 4, 5 and 6.
The hotel did not charge for breakfast and dinner for the president’s security team and for the use of three offices by the Vice President and two others
lliving on less than one US Dollar a day who had massively voted for change.
During his election campaign, Mr Barrow accused his predecessor of living a flamboyant lifestyle and wasting millions of tax payers money on festivities. He promised to introduce responsible spending and financial discipline in the heart of government.
