(JollofNews) – Gambians are voting in the first parliamentary elections since the defeat of the country’s former long-term ruler Yahya Jammeh.
238 candidates are contesting the 53 parliamentary seats and over 800, 000 people are registered to vote in the election according to the country’s electoral commission.
The United Democratic Party (UDP) has put up 44 candidates, 52 candidates are contesting the election on the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) ticket, while the country’s former ruling APRC party of Yahya Jammeh has put up 29 candidates.
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has put up 14 candidates, the Gambia People’s Democratic Party (GPDP) has four candidates, while the National Convention Party (NCP) has three candidates.
24 candidates are contesting the election on the ticket of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP), the People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has 22 candidates, while 41 people are contesting the election as independent candidates.
Polls are expected to open from 8am to 4pm and votes will be counted on the spot to increase transparency and a candidate who has a simple majority of votes would be declared winner.
Lets democracy prevail will of people must not be violated. Who ever win the seat must be respect as will of the people.
