(JollofNews) – Victims of the regime of former Gambian President Yahya Jammeh announced Saturday an “international campaign” to bring him to justice.
Jammeh, a former soldier, ruled the small English-speaking West African country from 1994 to January 2017, but now lives in exile in Equatorial Guinea.
His regime is accused by human rights defenders of systematically torturing political opponents and journalists, extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions and enforced disappearances.
“We will do whatever it takes to get justice, no matter how long it takes,” said Fatoumatta Sandeng from the campaign, who alleges her father Solo Sandeng died in April 2016 when he was detained by Jammeh’s National Intelligence Agency.
“The only thing that matters is that Jammeh and his accomplices are accountable,” Sandeng said in a statement released by Human Rights Watch.
The campaign, which is supported by local and international NGOs, demands Jammeh is extradited to the Gambia to face trial, but warned it could take years.
I hope they will file multi- jurisdiction suit worldwide going after Jammeh assets. We know he is a greedy moron, going after his stolen wealth will force him out of the rat hole to face the punishment he deserves.
I hopes jammeh will face justice, he is being widely accused and the records are available even in Googles. If he denial all these accusation, then he should come and face justice.
I have a heart full of regret and sympathy for the loss of all grieving families from the students of April 10th 2000 to the proliferation of death and torture, and disappearances by the hands of the State and it’s accomplices, up to 2016. This wholesale destruction and robbery of life and property is well defined and catalogued.
It is astounding that the multitude of allegations against former President Jammeh, have not been addressed by the International policing bodies, in any definitive exercise to address, these issues, through robust and definable measures. It would appear that the International community remain as silent and ineffective as they were when all this debauchery was taking place.
The country needs healing. Those who suffered terrible injustice under Jammeh must be allowed to report their experience. The Barrow administration must record the names of victims, perpetrators, time of incident and injuries sustained. Perpetrators must be given an opportunity to rebuttal. This is an unfortunate part of our history, we must study it and understand it, so we will never repeat.
God Bless The Gambia.
